Question : VPN & Router

I read on the Linksys site they have a VPN Router.

Does that mean that a client makes a VPN connection to the router and then can access the network without us having to have a separate VPN server?

Answer : VPN & Router

actually, I've done a couple now, they work really well. couple suggestions.

I would pay the money and ensure you have static IP's on both sides

Update the firmware to the latest, as there are issues with the BEFSX41. I upgraded to 1.45.3.

on the VPN screen, I set the local network to

192.168.1.x

remote was

192.168.2.x

in the remote gateway, you type the IP address of the remote wan IP.

under advanced, I ticked the last 4 boxes.  Keep Alive, was one of the options, I forget the rest, but you can click help and read about them.  Oh, something about passing NetBIOS info.  this ensures that when you go to network neighbourhood, you see all the machines.

It took a bit for the other network to propigate thru the VPN, but if you go to start, run and type \\machine-name, you can see shares on 'machine-name.

we saw transfer rates of 3-5 mb/min, copying raw files. Apparently that's pretty good for VPN over highspeed.

Mark.
